As a Gateway Speedskating Club member, you can decide whether you just want to skate recreationally, or if you want to race. If you decide you want to train for local, regional, and national-level competition, our coaches will help you reach your goals! Current gateway skaters have raced at all of these levels, and alumni have gone on to compete for the US National Teams in international competition.
Gateway Speedskating Club members have the opportunity to learn how to race during our series of Gateway Practice Races, held during our normal practice hours one week before local skating meets. These are informal races where skaters can apply the racing skills coaches have taught. Skaters race in small groups of their own ability level.
There are four meets held within Missouri- three in the St Louis area, and one in Jefferson City. These are a great opportunity to have fun racing and test your skills and conditioning! The Fall Warmup is in late October, and is held in the St Louis area. The Capital City Speedskating Championships are in Jefferson City, typically in the first week of December. The Gateway Speedskating Championships are in early January. The St Louis Silver Skates are in February. Ask a coach if you are interested in learning more about any of these events.
There are other meets and events throughout the Midwest that families can choose to attend. These might require a bit of a drive and a hotel stay, but if you are looking to challenge yourself racing with unfamiliar competitors, they are well worth the trip.
We’ll provide details here as they become available. You can also check out the US Speedskating Events Calendar for a complete list of speedskating meets and training camps.
